What We Do

Skills for Logistics is a comercial organisation born out of the erstwhile Sector Skills Council, of the same name, that will work closely with employers, government, Local Enterprise Partnerships, training providers and professional bodies to design and deliver solutions to address the employment and skills challenges faced by the Logistics Sector.

Vision

The vision is to create the best skilled and most productive logistics workforce in the world.  We will realise this by delivering three objectives:  Attract > Develop > Support

Attract – new recruits into the sector

The Logistics Sector needs to attract talented new people and challenge the misconception that the sector lacks great career opportunities.  We are delivering solutions designed both to inform and excite people about the range of careers the sector offers and to get them into jobs.

For example, we are connecting local employers to schools and colleges to make young people aware of the exciting opportunities that a career in logistics offers.  Our careers information, advice and guidance products include: ‘Made in China’; the Logistics Locker and Business on the Move.

Develop – solutions which enable people to progress their careers

We want to help people have the best possible logistics careers, whether they are currently working in the sector or looking for work in the sector.

For example, we often hear from employers how interviewees are not ‘work ready’.  In collaboration with leading logistics employers, Skills for Logistics has developed a Pre-Employment Training programme that delivers skills, training and preparation for a career in the sector.  The programme is a structured two week training programme focusing on the knowledge, motivation, skills and confidence to get people ‘work-ready’ and into employment.

Support – employers and individuals as they engage with and reform the skills system.

We are working to enhance collaboration across the sector, combining our employer networks at a local level with our influence and partnerships at a national level.  We will tackle employment and skills issues through this system and leverage funds to support the system.

For example, to connect Logistics Sector employers to the local community, we have established several employer networks to increase sector attractiveness amongst local talent pools, connect businesses with the local education system, encourage training and support recruitment.
