National Occupational Standards (NOS)
Skills for Logistics, with industry, is responsible for developing and maintaining the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for our sector. NOS cover specific roles within the logistics industries and can be used across the UK. They focus on what a person needs to be able to do, as well as what they must know and understand to work effectively and can be used to support recruitment, for writing job descriptions, in assessing staff and for developing qualifications and training programmes.
The benefits of NOS:
NOS help individuals, organisations and training providers to improve performance. They are useful for carrying out a variety of activities, for example:
- Describing the minimum standard to which an individual is expected to work in a given occupation
- Providing a statement of competence which bring together the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to do the work
- Providing a framework for training and development
- Improving recruitment by standardising the selection and interview process
- Helping to identify and fill skills gaps and shortages
Current NOS in development:
Thank you to those who have contributed to the NOS developments and consultations over the last 4 months. We have had a good response to the recent consultations and are now in the final stages of the process taking account of feedback and agreeing the final drafts. These will be submitted the National Occupational Standards database over the next month and should then be available for you to view and use via this database by February 2015.
