Maritime Studies (Able seafarer/tug rating – engine room)
This qualification is available at Level 2 and provides a structured programme of learning and practical experience with an emphasis on safety.
This qualification is an excellent way into the industry for anybody who wants to work on tugs. Tugs assist with the movement of larger ships in and out of port so that they can safely dock and undock. This job involves working in the engine room of a tug or ship ensuring the continuous running of machinery and equipment and organising maintenance procedures and necessary repairs in the engine room, power plant and auxiliary machinery.
Most tugs operate within the immediate area of a port or harbour, but there are opportunities for sea-going work if a disabled vessel needs to be moved to a safe haven or to assist with salvage work. Tugs and ocean-going ships operate from all larger ports and harbours.
