Maritime Studies (Rivers, inland waterways and limited distance to sea)
This qualification is available at Level 2 and provides a structured programme of learning and practical experience with an emphasis on safety. Vessels covered by this qualification operate on most navigable inland waterways and from coastal ports out a limited distance to sea.
The job involves working as a key member of the crew, assisting the Master of the vessel with navigation, steering and lookout. This will also include helping to manage passengers and cargo, operating and maintaining deck gear and assisting with mooring.
Part of the job is also helping to ensure the vessel is kept clean, tidy and ‘shipshape’ and possibly helping with routine maintenance tasks.
