Skills for Logistics now provides a wider range of apprentice training opportunities to younger people entering the industry than ever before. These aim to offer young people real choices in jobs with training rather than the school or college option that is more commonly known to young adults, parents and their advisors.
Apprenticeships have traditionally provided the ideal method for bringing young people into many industries. We can now build on this tradition to enable employers to offer reliable training linked to recognised national qualifications across their business whatever part of the freight transport sector they operate within.
Apprentices gain their initial experience and qualifications by driving, working in the warehouse or in the office. With the right motivation and ability apprentices can go on to achieve a level three NVQ/SVQ that is recognised as equivalent to two good A levels or three good higher grades.
The Young Drivers Scheme (YDS) is managed by Skills for Logistics on behalf of the Department for Transport and provides young drivers the opportunity of gaining their LGV licence before their 21st birthday.
National/Scottish Vocational Qualifications (N/SVQs) are work-based qualifications awarded to employees who have demonstrated their ability to do their job to an agreed industry standard.
Apprenticeships enable young people to learn whilst they work.
To take an apprenticeship, you need to already be in employment, or talk to your local Learning and Skills Council (LSC) about the possibility of becoming an apprentice, or find an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice.
