The Business Challenge
Leggetts Transport was facing issues with retention, attracting new talent and staff morale - particularly when
it came to its HGV Drivers. The company was suffering from cost of recruitment, a lack of career development for its employees, and a struggle to bring in a local, younger workforce. It was also looking to address the high cost of external training which was not delivering obvious benefits. The staff turnaround was impacting the business’ bottom line and something had to be done.
The Solution
Leggetts Transport looked at various aspects affecting the business. All of these led back to the same starting point – the introduction of a programme of Continuous Professional Development had the potential to help with recruitment, retention and in attracting new customers. They identified that publicly funded qualifications may help to address these issues and introduced National Vocational Qualifications to form part of its Sponsored Driver Training Programme. Initially this was rolled out to its existing drivers. In addition a Youth Career Scheme was developed to encourage a younger workforce. Following a training needs analysis and presentation to senior management it was agreed that tapping into the availability of publicly funded qualifications would help the company to achieve its goals and enhance the professional standing of the organisation amongst both its customers and its workforce. Leggetts Transport introduced NVQ Levels 2 and 3 in Storage & Warehousing, Traffic Office, and Driving Goods Vehicles within the organisation and has benefited from this ever since.
The Results
- 40% of all the company’s drivers are home grown
- Sponsored Driver Training Scheme costs approximately £1500 per trainee (recovered from turnover in less than a year) but resulted in a reduction of turnover of drivers from 23% to 11%
- The original recruitment costs were about £500 to £700 with all admin: induction costs. The resultant planned training especially for the Youth Career Scheme had an effect of increasing learning time for the job i.e. increased productivity and efficiency
- Driver training with the NVQ standard requirements had a marked effect on the reduction of costly vehicle incidents by 50%
