There were 8,787 LGV vacancies recorded at Jobcentre Plus offices across Great Britain in October 2008. This can be compared with 17,344 vacancies in the same month of 2007 – an decrease of 49%. Between September and October 08 vacancies decreased by 1,931. There appears to be a cyclical pattern in the number of vacancies, with peaks developing over the summer months.
Wales had 229 vacancies, equating to 3% of Great Britain’s LGV vacancies. Wales bucked the GB tend, with vacancies increasing 3% between September and October 08.
Scotland had 357 vacancies – 4% of the GB vacancies. Scotland mirrored the GB trend, with vacancies decreasing 5% between September and October 08.
Six out of the nine regions demonstrated a decrease in the number of vacancies notified between September and October 08. The largest absolute decrease in vacancies has been in the West Midlands - down by 666 (21%), followed by the East Midlands with 472 (15%) and Yorkshire and Humberside with 352 (17%).
The North East, South West and South East all had more vacancies advertised in October when compared to September 08.
The annual rolling vacancies has demonstrated a slight declined the last three months, with GB now around the 134,000 mark. As there are 298,200 active LGV drivers in GB according to Annual Population Survey, the turnover rate is 46% per annum.
