An event aimed at promoting careers and training opportunities in the logistics industry was staged at Newark Showground on the 20 April.
The event was hosted by Logistics Academy East Midlands, one of nine regional logistics academies being established across the country to provide quality, industry-relevant training and learning programmes to employers in the sector.
The event ran from 1pm to 4pm and enabled visitors to try out a new LGV driving simulator which uses realistic software to imitate everyday driving as well as some more challenging environments such as driving along mountain sides and in icy road conditions. There was also an opportunity to enjoy a ride in a 25m-long ECO-LINK vehicle being demonstrated by Lincoln-based Denby Transport. The lorry is designed to replace three standard articulated lorries and reduce carbon emissions.
Meanwhile, employers were given a demonstration of how to reduce freight operating costs through carbon reduction strategies, as well as learn ways to improve business performance.
Dr Mick Jackson, chief executive of Skills for Logistics, was a keynote speaker at the event. He reinforced the message of carbon reduction by highlighting the impact that fuel efficient driving and skills development can have on UK carbon emissions.
Craig Done, business development manager at the Logistics Academy East Midlands, hailed the day as a success: "Logistics is one of the largest industries in the UK and, despite the recession, continues to provide many employment opportunities.
"We are proud to be leading the way in helping employers in the sector to move forward with training programmes that will up-skill their workforce and provide them with valuable qualifications, which give them recognition in their field."
