Skills for Logistics (SfL), the Sector Skills Council for the freight logistics industries, is raising awareness of the new Guide to Periodic Training which was released earlier this month. The guide has been revised as result of feedback from the training providers and employers who have gone through the approvals process for delivery of Driver CPC over the last few months.
As members of the Yorkshire and Humber Freight Skills Group, Jobcentre Plus and the Road Haulage Association (RHA) have arranged for almost 50 Jobcentre Plus advisors in Yorkshire to get a taste of the logistics sector by a brief drive in a modern lorry, and a visit to a major warehouse, including trying out a fork lift truck. RHA Member E Pawson and Son Ltd, has made their modern facility at Europort in Normanton available, so that the Jobcentre Plus staff can hear at first hand how the various jobs available in the logistics industry work, and what opportunities there are for those who are interested in working in this fast moving industry.
Skills for Logistics (SfL), the Sector Skills Council for the freight logistics industries welcomes Anthony Bellia as its Regional Manager for London. Tony joins the organisation from the Learning & Skills Council (LSC) where he was employed for the past six years, most recently as a Skills Advisor for the Train to Gain Brokerage service. He has great experience of working with both employers and training providers to enable a practice of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in the London area.
Skills for Logistics, the Sector Skills Council for the freight logistics industries, is developing a new Diploma in Retail in partnership with Skillsmart Retail, Automotive Skills and the Council for Administration. The new diploma will include content focusing on logistics and supply chains.
Skills for Logistics has declared its commitment to securing a Sector Skills Council (SSC) licence next year. Chief Executive Ian Hetherington is now focusing on securing the increased responsibilities for delivering improvements in the Skills System on behalf of employers, set out by Lord Leitch, and on securing a renewed licence as an SSC.

The 2007 Better Balance, Better Business event, co–hosted by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) and Skills for Logistics (SfL) is aimed at addressing workforce issues in order to benefit businesses. · In the West Midlands there are 236,600 people employed in logistics and associated industries which equates to 9.5% percent of the region’s workforce
· 52% of the workforce in the logistics sector are qualified at below Level 2*, in comparison to an average of 34% across other industry sectors in the West Midlands.

Employers in the logistics industry must plan ahead to prevent a recruitment crisis.
That’s the message from survey results released today by Skills for Logistics, which reveals one LGV driver in six is currently aged 55 or over.
