Skills for Logistics, the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the freight logistics industries, is teaming up with leading stationer Office Depot to combat the myth of ‘white van man’ with the uptake of a new national code of conduct for delivery drivers.
The new vocational qualification from Skills for Logistics, developed in partnership with Awards UK, entitled ‘Carry & Deliver Goods’, takes a holistic approach to the skills required of a modern driver. Staff are trained to develop good customer service skills, complete pre and post-delivery routines and plan routes and timings for journeys as part of the new qualification.

Skills for Logistics is encouraging women in Scotland to consider a career as an LGV driver through its women only driver training scheme. With benefits including a good salary, flexible hours, interesting work and the chance to be their own boss whilst out on the road, driving an LGV is a career option with great potential, yet in Scotland only 2% of LGV drivers are women. Skills for Logistics aims to redress this, starting with this female focused training programme, with the support of the Scottish Executive.

One key factor hindering the recruitment of new drivers in the logistics industry is the lack of ‘real life’ experience. Although the industry is currently experiencing an acute driver shortage, there is a pool of new drivers with LGV licences that struggle to find employment due to a lack of experience. Skills for Logistics has developed a programmed called the Experience Booster which is intended to provide a proxy for experience and will come to serve as an industry-wide standard.
System Group is pleased to announce that it has achieved a 100% success rate for its driving Apprenticeships throughout 2004-2005. The average retention for Apprenticeship schemes for young people aged 16-24 is currently at 1/3 of all students however, System Group has come up with a formula for outstanding completion rates of its Driving Goods Vehicles Apprenticeships delivered through Skills for Logistics schemes.
Robert Wiseman Dairies has been awarded a national contract to deliver 100 Apprenticeships throughout England. The contract, awarded by the National Employer Service of the Learning and Skills Council, provides placements for driving apprenticeships. Robert Wiseman Dairies is the first food production company and the first civilian logistics company to be awarded this National Apprenticeship contract. The organisation intends to deliver these apprenticeships through Skills for Logistics’ Young LGV Driver Scheme.
Skills for Logistics is pleased to announce that Heidi Rushmer has been awarded the Worshipful Company of Carmen Apprentice of the Year Award. Heidi, aged 19, converted a keen interest in trucks into the first step of a career as a driver when she discovered Skills for Logistics Young LGV Driver Scheme (YDS). Heidi’s hard work and enthusiasm for the logistics industry has been acknowledged through this award.

The new vocational qualification ‘Carry & Deliver Goods’ takes a holistic approach to the skills required of a modern driver, with employer-led training supporting candidates to develop good customer service skills, complete pre and post-delivery routines and plan routes and timings for journeys.
“Re-engineering Skills Seekers” provides young people with the opportunity to gain on the job experience of real life as a logistics employee. Those involved in the project get an insight into the industry at the same time as completing their education. Over three years the programme combines education with day release into industry, followed by longer work experience placements and the opportunity to obtain their LGV licence and driving SVQs through Skillseekers and the Young Driver Scheme.

Launched this month, the new vocational qualifications developed by Skills for Logistics in close consultation with employers, promote nationally recognised standards relating to ‘Carry & Deliver Goods’, ‘Traffic Office’ and ‘Storage and Warehousing’.
