  • 18/11/2004Skills for Logistics and Nortec Training Win National Training Award

    Skills for Logistics, the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the freight logistics industries, and Nortec Training, have won the highly respected South East Region National Training Award for the Driving to Success project. The programme, aimed at providing the unemployed with a route to become a truck driver, has enabled almost 1,000 people to return to, or find work in the logistics industry

    Rebecca Jenkins, Managing Director of Lane Group plc, and member of Skills for Logistics’ Board of Directors, represents the logistics industry in a campaign aimed at raising awareness of skills issues.

     

    Rebecca is joined by other “Skills Ambassadors” including business leaders such as Roger Putnam, Chairman of Ford and Philip Williamson, Chief Executive of the Nationwide Building Society. The campaign to champion the link between skills and success features Skills Ambassadors explaining why they are committed to developing workforce skills as a foundation for success.

    Scotland is estimated to be short of over 4,000 LGV and van drivers. Women are grossly under-represented in driving jobs (currently only 16 of 700 Scottish Driver Training Scheme trainees are women). The Scottish Executive is to support a new scheme aimed at attracting women into driver training

  • 12/05/2004Skills for Logistics announces First Driver to Complete Scottish Young LGV Driver Training Scheme

    21 year old Tom Reid is the first to pass the Young LGV Driver Training Scheme (YDS) in Scotland. The YDS is an initiative from Skills for Logistics to provide increased training and support in the logistics industry. With the current driver shortages, encouraging and supporting young members of staff to obtain qualifications is vital.
