The logistics sector has an ageing driver workforce. In 2004 an estimated 23% of LGV drivers were aged 55+. The number of younger people entering logistics is disproportionately low in comparison with other industries, with only 9% being under 25.
Workers in the logistics sector are overwhelmingly male, white and have European ethnic origin. Only 22% of those employed in the sector are women.
Research published in 2004, shows that 7% of the workforce is from ethnic minority groups. However, the same research revealed that the road freight sector only employs 1% of its workforce from these groups. This is far below the general industry average.
Action
- The development of specific programmes to encourage more diversity in the workforce e.g. women only driver training.
- Skills for Logistics has been commissioned to conduct research into the real and perceived barriers to minority groups joining the industry.
- The promotion programme "Is Logistics Fit For Women?" has achieved extensive press coverage and will continue to roll out over the coming months.
- The Women in Transport Conference run in conjunction with the FTA will be followed up with another event aimed at highlighting gender issues in the industry.
