There is evidence, well concealed in many firms but undeniably present,which suggests they are suffering from deficiencies in basic skills - notably literacy and numeracy - among the lower levels of their workforce. For individuals, these deficiencies are often a cause for personal embarrassment so concealment will continue and it is likely to become an increasing brake on productivity as business becomes more complex and has to comply with higher standards of performance.
Action
- The logistics skills for life programme will contextualise basic skills and make them relevant to the industry.
- SfL will work closely with the Trade Unions and their Union Learning Reps who are in a good position to reach out to affected individuals.
- At all job levels emphasis will be placed on achieving the relevant skills mix – the right combination of core and craft skills to assist effective development.
- Basic skills are embedded in the "Experience Booster" programme, designed at ensuring the employability of new drivers.
- Advice will be provided on identifying basic skills needs during the selection process.
