Qualification:

Transport Goods by Road, NVQ

Having identified a lack of formal driver training and company transport operational procedures, Arla Foods decided to implement a new transport policy, to train all their staff in the Transport Goods by Road NVQ.

About the Scheme: Transport Goods by Road NVQ

This NVQ qualification involves a four day development programme with two days spent in a classroom environment and two days on the road with a Distribution Development Officer. Arla Foods produced a Driver Development Manual linked to NVQ standards, both for the courses and ongoing assessment.

Results

As a result of the scheme, 75 out of Arla Foods' 273 UK drivers have gained NVQs. Significant performance gains have been recorded at all five UK sites, with accident rates dropping by 10% and UK customers have also noticed improved service and consistency.

Future Plans

Arla Foods plans to put all its drivers through the NVQ.

Quote

"Our driver development programme and 48 hour week raises the standards of existing drivers, and encourages recruitment, reducing our dependency on agency staff."

Richard Wilson, National Logistics and Development Manager, Arla Foods.
