Employer starts own driving school

Man picking stock in a warehouse
Company

S Cooper & Sons - Winsford, Cheshire

Qualification

Various, including Young Driver LGV Training and Modern Apprenticeship

About the scheme

Haulage firm S Cooper & Sons decided to set up its own training school to combat problems with recruiting and retaining suitably qualified drivers. It was able to do this with the assistance of Omnia Training Ltd. As a result, five new recruits were able to train on the Young LGV Driver Training Scheme (YDS), with an additional three training under the Modern Apprenticeship Scheme - one training in the warehouse and two as mechanics. An additional 25 drivers have taken a professional driver qualification.

Results

S Cooper & Sons' main problem was recruiting good drivers and agency drivers were not used. By setting up its own training school, S Cooper & Sons' drivers can be trained specifically according to the company's own requirements.

Future Plans

To continue to provide ongoing training facilities for S Cooper & Sons and for any third party hauliers looking for well trained drivers.

Quote

"We set up the training school because we found it difficult recruiting good drivers for our purposes. Now we know that the drivers coming through the training will have a big advantage in the industry with the intensity and breadth of the training, and their final qualifications."

Bernard Rowson, in-house training officer, S Cooper & Sons.
