First Steps
Jobs such a being a drivers mate or warehouse operative are readily available and provide a first step on the career ladder. Find out about companies in your area and approach them to see what work they might have available.
Do you have a 50cc Motor Cycle Licence?
If you have a motorcycle licence, you can find courier work. Couriers transport items such as packages, documents and messages which need urgent delivery.
A 50cc motorcycle licence can be obtained following Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) available through the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) which then allows candidates to apply for their test and receive a full licence.
Getting a Fork Lift Truck Licence
You can obtain a fork lift licence at the age of 16. This is an ideal first step into entering a warehouse career. The licences are either offered on the job when required or can be obtained by approaching independent training providers, who are normally reached through the Association of Industrial Truck Trainers (AITT) or Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register (ITSSR) approved trainers.
If you've got a fork lift truck licence, you have the opportunity to begin your Logistics career as a warehouse operative.
Apprenticeships
Apprenticeship schemes are an option for school-leavers. NVQ Apprenticeship level 2 and Advanced Apprenticeships at level 3 are both available with the sponsorship of a specified company. The next step is to research companies that you're interested in and approach them to see if they offer apprenticeships.
