Welsh Logistics Forum

The Skills for Logistics Manager in Wales plans to convene a Welsh Logistics Forum comprising employers, providers and key partners to focus on skills issues in the industry affecting Wales. If you are interested in taking part in the forum or would like to know more, please contact Stephen Kennedy.

Apprenticeships

As in England there are both NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeships available. In Wales these are known as Foundation Modern Apprenticeships (FMAs) for NVQ Level 2 and Modern Apprenticeships (MAs) for NVQ Level 3.

Apprenticeships have traditionally provided the ideal method for bringing young people into many industries. We can now build on this tradition to enable employers to offer reliable training linked to recognised national qualifications across their business whatever part of the freight transport sector they operate within.

Apprentices gain their initial experience and qualifications by driving, working in the warehouse or in the office. With the right motivation and ability apprentices can go on to achieve a level three NVQ that is recognised as equivalent to two good A levels or three good higher grades.

Visit the Apprenticeship page for further information.

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)

NVQs are practical work-based qualifications that are recognised by employers and colleges throughout the UK. They are awarded to people who have proved their skill, knowledge and understanding of all aspects of their job. These qualifications demonstrate an individual's occupational competence in their job role.

Skills for Logistics have developed a range of NVQs for the road freight industry including driving, warehouse work and traffic office duties. A fact sheet is available for each NVQ, which includes further information and the units required for each NVQ level. Contact details are at the bottom of this page.

Visit the NVQ page for further information.

Young Driver Scheme (YDS)

The Young LGV Driver Scheme is managed by Skills for Logistics on behalf of the Department for Transport.

The scheme provides the opportunity for a young person to obtain a full Category C driving licence at the age of 18 rather than 21 and a Category C+E licence before his or her 21st birthday. By taking the scheme, young drivers are able to do a real and productive job, whilst receiving first-class training towards LGV licence acquisition and industry specific, nationally recognised qualifications.

Visit the YDS page for further information.

GO Wales

Graduate Opportunities Wales (GO Wales) is a business support and employability project delivered by all the university careers services in Wales. It offers logistics employers match funded graduate placement opportunities for holiday periods and graduate recruitment help for those seeking to employ graduates. The project is managed by HEFCW (Higher Education Funding Council for Wales) with additional funding from the Welsh Assembly Government. The project offers a range of services to mutually benefit students, graduates and businesses in Wales.

Funding

Public funding for training is disseminated through the Welsh Assembly Government’s Department for Children Education Lifelong Learning and Skills (DCELLS).

Logistics Employer Panel for Wales

Our consultation events with Welsh logistics employers spawned the Logistics Employer Panel for Wales. This is made up of roughly equal numbers of logistics employers from north and south Wales, meeting bi-annually to discuss skills matters affecting the logistics industry in Wales.

If you are interested in membership of the Employer Panel, please contact stephen.kennedy@skillsforlogistics.org.

Graduate Placement / Work Experience

Go Wales helps to link employers wishing to employ graduates with graduates seeking jobs. Go Wales also run a graduate placement/work experience scheme through all university holiday periods allowing employers the opportunity to sample the additional skills a graduate might bring to their business.

Consultation Responses

As a devolved administration, the policy framework in Wales has a different context to the English regions. Consequently the Skills for Logistics Manager in Wales responds to Welsh Assembly Government and other partner consultations on behalf of the sector. The links below give the responses lodged.
