The logistics sector covers ten subsectors, which together employs around 29,900 people across Northern Ireland (4% of the nation’s workforce).

> Sector Skills Agreement for Northern Ireland
Sector Skills Agreements (SSAs) are intended to operate, as formal and public documents, that:

Form an agreement between employers within the sector to undertake collective action to invest in skills, improve the supply of skills and raise productivity

Operate between Skills for Logistics and partner organisations that need to act in various ways to fulfil the Agreement

Operate between each sector and Government, which will use various means to support implementation.

Work in Northern Ireland has now been completed on the first four stages of the Logistics SSA.

> Driver Certificate of Professional Competence
The logistics industry faces a major challenge from September 2009 when the European Driver Training Directive comes into UK law. This will require each professional driver to hold a Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) and undergo five days of training every five years. We estimate this will mean an additional 500,000 training days per year split pro-rata across the four nations.
