> New Standards for Carry and Deliver Goods
During the summer, Skills for Logistics ran a series of workshops across the UK and sought the views and opinions of employers and training experts about updating the Carry and Deliver Goods National Occupational Standards (NOS). That review is now completed and we need your views on the new NOS developed in the workshops.

As we explained in the workshops, the review of the C&D NOS took place in the context of the recommendation from employers that we merge the C&DG and Driving Goods Vehicles NOS to create a group of units dealing with all types of professional goods vehicle driving. In effect we agreed to take the 'best' units from the Driving Goods Vehicles and Carry and Deliver Goods occupational standards and use these as a basis for new qualifications throughout the UK.

As a result the C&DG workshops looked at both the existing C&DG units and the new Driving Goods Vehicle-replacement NOS. Their conclusion was that only four new CDG NOS were required to capture those parts of goods delivery and goods vehicle driving not covered in the DGV-replacement NOS. It is these four new NOS units that we now ask you to review and comment upon. So that you get a picture of the full suite of Driving NOS, we have provided a link to the new DGV-replacement NOS

The new CDG NOS follow the same style as the new DGV-replacement NOS, intended to be clearer and less wordy than the old NOS - but you will have views as to whether we have achieved that.

> The next step - new qualifications
The existing level 2 Carry and Deliver Goods NVQ will not be replaced with a new NVQ. The replacement, using the new NOS, will be a qualification in the new Qualifications and Credit Framework. This will allow a more tailored approach to be adopted - allowing different driving roles, or driving duties in specialist sub-sectors to be captured in the qualification. This will be done by using the merged DGV and CDG NOS and using other QCF units dealing with either specialist technical skills or other workplace skills such as customer service.

So, to provide a 'core' driving qualification we will identify a combination of units that meets the needs of a non-specialist driver driving mainstream vehicles - be it a van or a lorry - and following routeing instructions given by their transport manager. This will be the replacement for the DGV and CDG S/NVQs. Alongside this core we will be able to develop specialist qualifications that use units representing those specialist skills and knowledge.
