There were 6,688 LGV vacancies recorded at Jobcentre Plus offices across Great Britain in June 2009. This can be compared with 18,042 vacancies in the same month of 2008 – a decrease of 63%. Between May and June 2009 vacancies increased by 1,993.
January 2009 saw the lowest number of vacancies recorded since monitoring began, which coincided with the UK entering into a recession. However, since then a steady increase in vacancies has been reported.
Wales had 104 vacancies, equating to 2% of Great Britain’s LGV vacancies. Wales bucked the GB tend, with vacancies decreasing 52% between May 09 and June 09.
Scotland had 415 vacancies – 6% of the GB vacancies. Scotland mirrored the GB trend, with vacancies increasing 7% between May 09 and June 09.
Seven out of nine regions demonstrated an increase in the number of vacancies notified between May 09 and June 09. The largest absolute increases in vacancies has been in the South East, followed by Yorkshire and Humber and the North West. The South West and North East both saw a decrease in the number of vacancies notified.
The annual rolling vacancies has demonstrated a marked declined the last three months, with GB now around the 77,000 mark. As there are 298,200 active LGV drivers in GB according to Annual Population Survey, the turnover rate is 26% per annum.
